IMDI what??
Ever heard of IMDI? No? Don't worry, it's a new method of controlling things in a modular synth; developed by AE module manufacturer wonkystuff and adopted by tangible waves - but it's not limited to AE modular.
IMDI is the "Inter Module Digital Interface". Besides of the classic modular control methods, CV and Gate, IMDI is a third way to send control data within a modular synth, with the advantage that, as it is a digital communications protocol, more complex information can be sent over one cable.
It is no coincidence that IMDI sounds similar to MIDI; basically, it is based on the established and well-known MIDI protocol, enhanced by a set of conventions that are created specifically with the application in a modular synth in mind.
In practical use, this means that you can patch data with the exactly same cables you use anyway; this opens up possibilities like
The specs will be published too; if you are interested to learn more about IMDI, please get in touch: [email protected]

- Versatile DAW integration (bi-directional)
- Easy polyphony for modular synth
- Seamless interaction of CV, Gate and MIDI/IMDI
